What to Watch Tonight: Jem and the Holograms

Reacquaint yourself with the ’80s cartoon, because a live-action version is headed to theaters

jem and the holograms!

Look up Hasbro movies.

What populates? Battleship, G.I. Joe, Transformers, [insert muscle-flexing boy toy here].

Which is why we’re ecstatic for the latest news out of Hollywoodland. Jem and the Holograms is headed to the big screen.

That’s right, ladies of the ’80s, your favorite pink-haired punk rocker is stealing the spotlight from brawny action figures with a live-action reboot. So now’s a good time to revisit the fleeting toon: All three seasons are streaming on Netflix.

For those of you born after 1990, Jem is outrageous, and her music’s contagious. Doesn’t ring a bell? She’s the hot stuff alter ego of Starlight Music manager-slash-orphan Jerrica Benton. Her job: to protect Synergy, the magical computer her father left her, from rival bands The Misfits and The Stingers (watch the intro below).

Like the aforementioned productions, this one’s pulling out the big guns. Industry heavyweights include Scooter Braun (producer/Justin Bieber’s manager), Jon M. Chu (director of G. I. Joe Retaliation), and Jason Blum (horror film fiend/Blumhouse Productions founder). Though talented, we’re thinking none of these dudes knows how to treat the lady or her doppelganger. Which might be why they’re asking for your help. Not your money — your talent: costume design, songwriting, the works, right down to who plays Jem. Casting calls are open.

Great news, right? Here’s more. Sofia Coppola’s in talks to direct a Little Mermaid reboot.

Seriously. Google it.
