Atavist Books Launches with “Sleep Donation”

A new publishing venture takes off in a weird and wonderful way

sleep donation!

If there’s one thing we at DailyCandy love, it’s a newborn. And tomorrow is someone’s due date.

Watch new publishing venture Atavist Books emerge on the scene.

This baby has three dads — publisher Frances Coady, IAC chairman Barry Diller, and producer Scott Rudin — and though it will put out some books in print, its business model is digital first. And it’s wasting no time learning to crawl.

The company, which will release one book per month for the rest of 2014, steps out with the digital-only novella Sleep Donation, by Pulitzer Prize finalist Karen Russell (Swamplandia, Vampires in the Lemon Grove, St. Lucy’s Home for Girls Raised by Wolves).

Fans of the woman with the weird and wonderful imagination will delight in the sci-fi thriller set in a dystopian future where insomnia is contagious — and sometimes deadly — and people are desperate to dream. There’s no need for us to tell you the full plot of the short work, which is filled with haunting images and Russell’s captivating turns of phrase. It won’t take you long to read the whole thing yourself.

Though you might need someone to swaddle you once you do.

Available at atavistbooks.creatavist.com, $4. (Hint: Have some fun and click the cover.)
