Screen Play: Play It Again, Sam

11 songs inspired by the Tribeca Film Festival

tribeca film festival!

There are still three days left. Ample time to check out Aatsinki, Run and Jump, and Sunlight Jr.; and stream Farah Goes Bang, Alias Ruby Blade, and best feature winner Lil Bub & Friendz online for free (’til midnight EST, April 28).

Tomorrow the Heineken Audience Award winners will be announced, with extra screenings for the winners come Sunday. The current leader board: Cutie and the Boxer (doc) and Wadjda (narrative).

In the meantime, stream our kinda-random but entirely festival-inspired playlist as you brave rush lines, navigate Varick, and wait out buffering.

“Cat Daddy,” by Rej3ctz
(Theme for Lil Bub and her cat daddy.)

“Mistaken for Strangers,” by The National
(From the doc more about how to make a doc than a roadie’s-eye view.)

“Hallelujah,” by Jeff Buckley
(Greetings from Tim Buckley.)

“Beetlejuice Main Titles / End Titles,” by Danny Elfman
(Tribeca Drive-in fans said his name three times.)

“Come Rain or Come Shine,” by Ray Charles
(From closing night’s The King of Comedy.)

“Main Street,” by Deer Tick
(Get a taste of the band scoring Oxyana.)

“Goodbye Summer,” by Jonny Fritz
(Country twang from the Corndawg, who also tunes Oxyana.)

“Your Hand in Mine,” by Explosions in the Sky
(Sample the band that scores soon-to-release Prince Avalanche while revisiting FNL.)

“Mad World,” by Michael Andrews and Gary Jules
(A Donnie Darko song, performed by composer Michael Andrews, who scores The Reluctant Fundamentalist. Side note: TRF begins with outstanding Pakistani track “Kangna,” by Fareed Ayaz & Abu Muhammad.)

“Closer,” by Tegan and Sara
(It’s in the trailer for G.B.F., sitting in fourth place for the Heineken Audience Award.)

“(I’ve Had) the Time of My Life,” by Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes
(We can’t get Bub and Bob red-carpet dancing out of our head. The song title says it all.)

Mic drop.
